Pinterest Traffic Strategy: Turn Pins Into Smart Link Clicks

Pinterest traffic behaves differently from other platforms. Here is how to route pin clicks by country and device so one link works for years, not one campaign.

Pinterest Traffic Strategy: Turn Pins Into Smart Link Clicks

Most social traffic has a shelf life measured in hours. A Pinterest pin does not work that way. A pin you publish today can still be driving clicks in a year, resurfacing in search and in other people's boards long after you have forgotten you made it. That is exactly why the link behind it deserves more thought than a single static URL.

A link posted on Instagram or TikTok is seen by roughly the same audience, in the same short window, on whatever device that audience happens to be using that week. A pin gets found gradually, by people searching months apart, on phones and tablets, in different countries, often saved to a board and clicked again later. If the destination behind that pin only works for the audience you had in mind on day one, it quietly stops converting for everyone who finds it afterward.

Why Pinterest traffic needs a different kind of link

Pinterest functions more like a visual search engine than a feed. People search for ideas, save what they like, and come back to saved pins when they are ready to act, sometimes right away, sometimes weeks later. That means a single pin accumulates clicks from a much wider spread of countries, devices and moments than a post that lives and dies in a 24-hour feed cycle.

A static link handles the first wave of clicks fine. It struggles with everything that comes after: the international saves, the clicks from an old board resurfacing in someone's search, the mobile user who taps through from the Pinterest app versus the desktop user browsing boards on a laptop. Rebuilding the pin every time the destination needs to change is not realistic either, since older pins keep circulating on their own.

Route the click by country without remaking the pin

A single pin often reaches a genuinely international audience, especially once it starts ranking in Pinterest search rather than just showing up in home feeds. Sending everyone to one storefront or one landing page written for a single country wastes a large share of that reach.

A smart link with geo-targeting solves this without touching the pin itself. The pin keeps its one URL, but the destination adjusts automatically based on where the click comes from: a shopper in the US lands on the US store, a shopper in the UK lands on the UK store, and anyone outside your served markets can land on a waitlist or a general page instead of a broken checkout. You update the routing once, and every pin using that link benefits, including ones you published months ago.

Route the click by device, because Pinterest spans all of them

Pinterest usage splits across the mobile app, the desktop site and, increasingly, tablets used for planning and saving. A link built with only mobile in mind can send desktop visitors to an app-only page that does not render properly, and a link built for desktop can leave mobile visitors waiting on a slow, non-native experience.

Device targeting sends each visitor to the version of your destination built for the device they are actually using: an app deep link or app-store page for mobile taps, and a full desktop experience for anyone browsing from a laptop. You are not maintaining separate pins for separate devices. One link handles the split automatically.

Get the click into the app, not stuck in a slow preview

When someone taps a pin's outbound link from the Pinterest app, that click often opens inside Pinterest's built-in browser instead of the visitor's normal one. In-app browsers are slower, and if your destination is another app, such as a store, a music platform or a video app, the visitor has to notice a small prompt and tap it themselves to actually leave the webview.

Opening the linked app automatically instead of leaving visitors stuck in a preview removes that extra step. The link detects the destination app is installed and opens it directly, so a visitor who taps through to your Instagram profile, your store app or your music link lands in the real app immediately rather than a slower in-app copy of it.

Find out which pins are actually converting

Pinterest gives you saves, impressions and outbound clicks per pin, but that data stops at the click. It does not tell you whether the person who clicked from a specific pin went on to buy, sign up or bounce once they landed.

Tagging the link behind each pin with a UTM parameter closes that gap. Because pins keep circulating long after you publish them, tagging by pin rather than by campaign lets you see, months later, which specific pin is still quietly sending buyers your way and which ones only ever generated saves. That is the difference between guessing which pin format works and actually knowing.

Put the pieces together

None of this requires rebuilding your Pinterest strategy from scratch. It means treating the link behind each pin as infrastructure rather than an afterthought:

  1. Use one smart link per pin destination instead of a raw URL, so you can change the routing later without touching pins that are already circulating.
  2. Add geo-targeting if your audience spans more than one country or shipping region.
  3. Add device targeting so mobile and desktop visitors both land somewhere built for their device.
  4. Let the link open the destination app directly instead of leaving visitors in Pinterest's in-app browser.
  5. Tag each link with a UTM so you can tell, weeks or months later, which pins are still converting.

A pin published this week could still be sending you traffic next year. The link behind it should be built to still work correctly when that happens, not just on launch day.
